In the very first episode, Beth is seen picking up a book written by her mother, Alice Harmon, titled "Monomial Representations and Symmetric Presentations." This scene was an indication given to the audience that the girl's mom was a talented mathematician. Beth appears to have inherited this trait. Later in the series, there's one scene of Beth sitting in a math class and being the only one who could correctly define what "binomial" means.
