Could have been the South Shetland Islands. It has a harsh climate, is the home to a couple of Penguin species, and has many research stations.

ok people, creatures beeing killed might sound cruel, but thats nature, this happens a thousend times all over the globe. Even if there are no tourists around who spend a lot of money to see the last undisdurbed nature only to disrupt it, it does happen!
And dont forget: humans are the only creatures on earth who kill for joy.
