All the people falling over backwards are reason why the handrail is usually designed to run faster than the escalator itself.

Well the reason that the handrail is running faster is simply, that it is moved by the same engine (=same speed) but is longer than the stairs, so moves faster.

Heloise, that does't make sense. When both are moved by the same engine and have the same speed, why should the handrail be faster just because its longer (and you said it yourself, they have the same speed) ?
You are basicly saying when two cars drive with the exact same speed and one car has a longer way to drive, than this means this car is faster...
Same speed means that noone is faster than the Other...
