I've had many cats over the years and never has one even tried to run away. I can leave the door wide open and they will just ignore it.
Get your pets fixed and don't let cats wander. They destroy local ecosystems and die much sooner than they should.
If they try like hell to get away from you at every opportunity, you don't deserve to have a pet. You are doing it wrong.

I have six cats now, they just come over the fence and slowly move in ... reckon they were not looked after where they lived before, anyway, I still have many birds in the trees around my house.
