Life expectancy is only that high in Okinawa. Old Asian people lie all the time about their age due to no records of birth. Also there is more than plenty of crap food in Japan. If someone could just stop the anime we'd be great.

#9 Nobody would eat raw horsemeat in the west, but I guess giving it a japanese name makes it sound cool and delicate and people would want to eat it.

Mat,

I've had it. It was delicious! My Japanese friends didn't tell me what it was until after I ate it.

#11 Beer in outdoor vending machines was a much appreciated surprise for me.

Mat,
I am French, and you can get a horse tartare. (raw meat). It minced meat with capers, onions and various other seasonings.
And it tastes great.

They will often fart into their socks as not to be impolite to other’s sense of smell.

Square melons are a thing (and go for about $90 each).

Giving fruit as a gift is the norm in Japan, but as you'd imagine, some fruit is more valuable than others. Enter the square watermelon — a cultural phenomenon that's purchased for aesthetic reasons and not usually eaten. You'd have to hope they have a long shelf life as the decorative fruits go for around $90 each.
