Myrti, well yes - but also it could be very green. I've worked at a steam locomotive museum and we also burned wood although it's not very effective but it's renewable. But theoretically it could use whatever heats water up (hydrogen etc).

Burning coal is of course not a clean solution and catalytic converters are non-existent.

That smoke tho... if it is burning stonecoal then soot in it is all kinds of bad, everything from cancerogens to radiation right over the fields...

If it is charcoal then it is mostly OK, except you would still wouldn't want to breathe it in whole day.

Not sure if it is very effective compared to modern equipment as you Do need a farmhand every couple of feet on that thing.

To all the haters: At least in western countries those machines are only used for demonstration purposes and photographers. Which is imho very nice to see and culturally interesting.
