No they didnt throttle them down (still 1000-1200rpm) Only the airforce was sped up to close to 2000rpm.
No a barrel is rated to 300 shots before replacing (at least was when i was in the Danish army in '85)
The MG42 from WW2 had 1550 Rounds per Minute, the MG3 (nearly the same MG but only with 7,62mm and a modified spring and bolt) max 1200 rounds per minute. No MG3. no matter in which army used, can do more than 1200 rounds. And the official statement from Rheinmetall is 150 rounds and than replacing the barrel (non combat use).
