Anse,

i believe it's to try capture the signal between the car key and the car. so they can replicate it. it's one of the reason expert say you shoudln't leave the car key close to the front door but rather far away in the house.

Usually there are two antennas. The large square antenna acquires the signal from the key fob (which is why the first thief is near the home). The signal is then transmitted to the second antenna, held by the second thief who is right near the car. The second antenna is then able to unlock the car door and start the engine.
