#1 You should move to a country with workers' rights. You may still be laid off, but your boss will have less freedom to do so and you will get a notice some time ahead.

Fenrisulven, what he didn’t tell you is that he’s a drunk who hadn’t showed up to work for the last 4 days. And when he did show up he was disheveled, smelly, and belligerent.

Abigail, nope. Come to Germany, we have notice periods, after probation period (6 months) we have minimum 4 weeks notice, AND there has to be a valid reason vor laying someone off... ;-)

Abigail,

NOPE. Not in Europe. Workers have rights here.
USA is not always the best, same for Europe and the rest of the world.
But in this case we are way better

Bell,

Lay-off is a valid reason. They can send you away and pay you the last month salary. Also there is immediate termination.

Shirley,
That's not a summary dismissal you're talking about. And if you are terminated without notice, there is a hearing beforehand by the employer/HR and the works council, if there is one, before the termination without notice can be pronounced. You will never find the stuff packed at the table (because it is not allowed) and without having talked to someone about the termination without notice.
