I thought it was a carved design in marble or stone that was filled with dirt.
But since it's a rug, why didn't they hang it up first to beat on it with a rug beater to loosen and force out some of the impacted dirt? Then while it's still hanging, blast it with the high pressure sprayer for a longer duration while gravity pulls the heavy dirt particles out.
