It has to do with it's direction as well. It's a symbol of peace that the Nazi's took and modified.

Many cultures had a swastika symbol. The symbol is not that complicated, just a cross with hooks.

Also, the symbol itself, at least in the European north, simply represents the sun disk, and the hooked ends can be spirals or swirls. It is as old as the megalithic structures found everywhere in Europe.

There was a Ukrainian commenter that discussed the Ukrainian Holodomor (a famine that killed millions of Ukrainians) and how the Ukrainians now wear Swastikas to scare the Russians. I wanted to learn more about Ukrainian history from him/her, but you deleted the comments?
