tbh carpenters don't have this problem, they tend to use nail guns nowadays, it's more for the diy-ers. yes the nail can be hold by fingers, or a peg, but how often have you hit your fingers by the hammer ?
admitedly that trick only work for rather long nails which are the less likely to cause you to hit your fingers.
nowadays. There was a time before nail guns, and clamping the nail to the hammer and hammering it in (the first blow) this is not only quicker, but also you will have your other hand free to hold on to something (if needed).
