I programmed in COBOL (yes I am old):
- take blank giant roll of blue Paper stripe
- cut EVERY 8-bit line into it by hand punch machine via a stencil
- Load finished paper roll into giant machine that actually had a RAM and was a boiling hot bastard
- find the mistake by going through the whole thing again
- cut out mistake with scissors, literally add red 'patch' with glue
- load roll into giant machine again to have a nice workday sauna
- find new Mistake on now Frankensteins code band
- Guess what: Saunaday (hoorray!)
- in case code was working at some point, copy code on celluloid strip again by hand (more durable)
- repeat next week (we were working on Eigenvalue problems)
Still the same: Scratching your head why it suddenly worked...
Have a nice day, folks! :)

This actually happens.
I applied for a *very* junior sysdev gig way back when, got an interview yada yada yada.
Three(!) weeks later I got an email telling me I was shortlisted for a second interview and a personality test, which would be followed by a "post-personality assessment interview" (lolwut?) a week later. When I politely declined because I had already gotten a job the HR dude replied 3 days later, calling me me unprofessional and accused me of wasting their time.

Rudolph, you should have told them “I’ll tell you what, you double my current offer and I’ll consider coming to work there.”
