"At the 1944 Academy Awards, Barbara Stanwyck was expected to win Best Actress for her career defining performance in Double Indemnity, which is still regarded as a classic of film noir. Instead, the award went to Ingrid Bergman for her equally fine performance in the gothic thriller Gaslight (which is where the term comes from.)
When asked if she was sad about not winning, Barbara said something to the effect of:
“I’m a proud member of the Ingrid Bergman fan club, and I can’t be sad because my favourite actress won, and she has earned it in all her performances.”"
