“A cutting board type thing found in the kitchen section of a thrift store”

"A friend of mine who had a stroke has one of these. It holds the meat while he cuts, since he doesn’t have very good use of his left hand. It is often used by handicapped people."

“A small sterling silver ring attached to a hammered bowl”

"It’s a caretaker’s feeding spoon. Looks a bit large for a baby, but would be a good size for helping feed an elderly or bedridden person."

“I walked past this many times while in Berlin and still can’t figure out what it is.”

"It’s a clock specifically called Mengenlehreuhr or “set theory clock” in German."

“It’s a small, lightweight, glass item. Doesn’t drain from top to bottom, and there are no moving parts.”

"It’s an essential oil diffuser, a tea light goes at the bottom."

“A weird bench shelf thing I found near my house.”

"It’s a bench for a mudroom to sit on while putting on one’s shoes. Storage areas are underneath for shoes and larger items."

“It’s about 2 feet tall, hollow like a wiffle bat, with a suction on the bottom and a loose rubber sleeve around it.”

"It’s to help put a compression hose on a source, we have one at work."

“Looks like a bidet and has a lid with adjustable water temperature. The bowl however is a little wide to sit on.”

"This type of bidet is more common in Europe. Your resort may have installed them if that’s where their clientele is from."

’’My mom found this in my dad’s drawer. Is it what I am afraid of?’’

"The classic Sunbeam Mixmaster had a juicer attachment, a bowl that attached to the top of the mixer. This is the spout the juice would pour out of. The wire part held a little strainer to filter out pulp."

’’What’s this insanely heavy glass with bubbles inside? The inscription says 1978.’’

"Looks like a paperweight used to keep stacks of papers from blowing off of the desk if there is a breeze. They are mostly used as decorations now."

’’What’s this weird glass ball, suspended by screws, in a metal frame, bronze or gold color in appearance?’’

"It is a Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder. You place a strip of card into one set of grooves in the piece that curves behind the sphere, point the opposite side of the sphere towards the equator, and the sphere will focus the sunlight to burn a track on the card. The card has hours marked, and more the card is burnt, the brighter the sunlight was."

’’What’s this thick round wooden stick with a cylindrical structure on one end?’’

"Possibly used with a Singing Bell. You rub the stick lightly around the edge and the bell starts vibrating. You might have seen the same effect with glasses."

’’What’s this three-legged stool with a very narrow back, does it serve a specific purpose?’’

"It’s a milking stool, 3-legged birthing style spinning chair. So basically, no special use."

’’I found this at nan’s house, it’s a glass vase with metal grill inside.’’

"It’s for arranging cut flowers (a rose bowl)."

’’This thing is made of leather, and about 15″ in length. Any ideas?’’

"It looks like a decorative tassel from a purse."

’’I found this stainless-steel object when cleaning out a lab space. Has an “H” in a diamond stamp.’’

"It’s a glass tube cutter! I used it many times in chemistry lab."

’’I found this in an old cabinet, made entirely of glass with narrowing holes all the way through.’’

"It’s a flower frog, used to hold a flower arrangement in a vase. Made obsolete by foam and gels."

’’Does anyone know what the purpose of the little hole on the back of this empty gold ring is?’’

"The reason it has a hole is to prevent air pressure changes from damaging the ring."

’’What is this glass object? It’s fairly heavy, has no markings, and a very narrow hole on top.’’

"It’s an oil candle."

’’This ring was buried in my garden. After cleaning it, I saw that it doesn’t look like an ordinary ring. Any ideas?’’

"This is heartbreaking. The ring is worn as a mourning ring. It’s a Georgian/early Victorian ring whose initials belong to the lost loved one. They were typically made from gold (18k+) and enameled in black. It looks like yours was made around the 1820s-40s."

“This thing is mounted on a wall at my work. At the bottom where the speaker is, there are a few buttons.”

“Looks like a Simon game. You start it, then you push the buttons following the sequence. As you progress you have to remember longer and longer sequences.”

“What is this chrome thing near the toilet and the TP holder?”

“Looks like a holder for magazines. ‘Literature’ is an important bathroom supply category — or at least used to be before smartphones, I guess.”

“Small plastic pouch with red gel and a metal disc inside.”

“Hand warmer. You can ‘click’ the metal piece, and it will start a chemical reaction and heat the pad.”

“4-meter high funnel with 3 outlets near a playground and a garden in Germany.”

“Toss a ball in it and guess which hole it comes out. That’s what kids did for fun in the ’80s.”

“What are these little knit tubes?”

“Not sure if that was the original idea for them, but they can be used to keep chairs from scratching your floors. So they are socks, but for chairs rather than humans.”
