No, it skipped. Those 'chirps' were the sound of the stone repeatedly making contact with the ice as it bounced across the pond. When skipping a stone across water you hear repeated little splash sounds, it is just very faint because the water absorbs a lot of the sound, but the ice acts like a taut drum head or the rim of a glass as you rub your wet fingertip along the edge.
