Junior,
he chiseled a slot in the wood. then sliding the blade thru that hole and connecting it on the other side. he's using a hand saw blade, but the tool is a large Coping saw. with practice you can make a lot of good manual cuts that a simple jigsaw could make.

It's brilliant designing, but the seat doesn't look very comfortable. Especially with the seat being longer than the back of the chair and with a slight slant down towards the front. Better, more comfortable chairs can be made with less effort.
