There are videos on YouTube (Mathologer or Numberphile come to mind) but, the trick is to look at the area -- notice that the pieces are not fully contained the first two times, only at the end it seems a tight fit.

Allie,

See it as the tinfoil wrapper around your chocolat bar. It takes almost no space and the bar plus wrapper fit nicely in the outer paper wrapper.

Now take that tinfoil and crunch it into a cube. Same volume but now it wouldn't fit.

Tashie, so...that miniscule bit of loose space in the first configuration is ALMOST taken up by the first cube. And THEN whatever space is left is the same volume as the second cube??? I'm not sure if I'm expressing this well...it's a tricky spacial concept.

It's a trick, what you can't see is that there is a spacial gap in the back, and each additional block fills in the space which is redistributed by the cross angle.
