To protect their cubs from predators, rabbits hide them in the ground, disguising a hole or simply burying them. Mother visits them several times a day to feed.

Since there was a badger sett in the area, the number of rabbits has been decimated. A badger is a good digger and a bad hunter. Too stupid to catch a rabbit, but a litter of young bunnies is a treat.

Rabbits are well equipped to dig and often have warrens in places with good soil. She's not so much as burying as she is closing the door.
