They may not use the scratching post that you buy for them. Ours didn't.
Instead they did a number on an old couch of ours. It was old, we let them, mostly, but sometimes the wife got irritated and decided to trim their claws.
Having pets means negotiating. You should try to let them live the way they want, do what they want, but there have to be limits, which will depend on the circumstances. Such as the kind of furniture you have.
