Intuitively resourceful. But, it's only as effective as how quickly you pull the bag away at the moment of combustion. Otherwise, if that was your only bag...that was your only shot.

Everything is perfect until the plastic bag comes into the equation (very modern)... a glass bottle alone or with water works better.

Agreed. Although, it’s a pretty good idea to use ZipLoc style bags when packing light is important.

Vert, Also resourceful would be carrying a book of matches or a pocket lighter because they're light, too. Unless, of course, Indians just used zip bags.

Yulan,
Wow! You're soooooo smart! Let's instead bring things that are useless when wet and something that can easily be lost. Good GOD I wish I were as brilliant as YOU.

Laverne, If those "useless" items were wet, the wood would be as well. Or didn't you know that, rocket scientist?

there are many ways to start a fire, this is just one way. I like fire pistons for light and cheap. I usually carry for a day hike a forever match, lighter, waterproof matches. Longer trips have 2 more fire starting methods all split up in waist/butt pouch, patrol bag and main bag.

On the old Johnny Carson show (the Tonight Show), I saw a guy start a fire with two sticks. It took him maybe ten seconds.
