If they have the sun backlighting the fireworks, the spectators will have to choose between wearing sun glasses, which would mute the visual effect, or accept developing eye damage.

On the other hand, if they schedule and align their performance so the sun is behind the spectators, then the sun shining on the fireworks smoke would impart "glare" and large shadows which may mute the overall visual effect.
