The population numbers aren't the problem the waste they generate is. Single-use plastic being at the forefront closely followed by fast fashion.
the other issue is good old human greed. There are more empty apartments in the US than homeless people. the world produces a lot more food than we need but we still have starvation.
The United States is the largest waste producer per capita with 2.58 kg per day followed by Canada with 2.33 kg and then Australia with 2.23 kg.
Also interesting is however food waste. China is the biggest food waster with 108 million tonnes followed by India 78 million tonnes and then the US with 24 million tonnes.
The US produces more than double the amount of waste per person than Japan.
