Location for context please. These are two very different roof coverings and each has their own benefits and downsides. The slate roof is obviously very expensive but is fantastically durable and would need little maintenance over decades of use. The other roof is made in America and is OBVIOUSLY cheap, lasts maybe five years before needing to be replaced, takes relatively little skill to install and basically gets the job done . . . . . . it's market based: you buy the one you feel you can afford but slate tiles are aesthetically more appealing and last longer.

The shingle roofs in the USA are good for 20-30 years.

This is not a comparable set of roofs. We could never do a tile roof in Alaska, it wouldn't last a single winter, and we generally dont do tar shingle either, we were ceder shake, but now more metal roofs on new construction.
