I have never lived in any home with an HOA, and after these examples I think anyone who does is out of their mind.

Izzy,

Not all are bad. Our hoa fees cover maintenance of the common areas and neighborhood pool. They pretty much leave us alone. I see things every day that are in violation of our bylaws and no one cares. I’m guilty of a few myself.
The only letter I ever got was when I left my boat on the street for 2 weeks.

I live in a place with a HOA several years ago and after they went after me for some stupid thing I became a member of the HOA and help stop their nonsense.

I would never live in HOA
I take enough order from boss, wife , government officials definitely do not need some one telling how to live and maintain my house

Eastern German here. For some (obvious) reasons all this HOA stuff gives me the shivers. During the Nazi times we had the so called 'Blockwart' who was the first to snitch on people with horrible outcomes, even torture or execution. During socialist times we had the so called 'ABV - Abschnittsbevollmächtigter', being responsible for the 'well behaving' of your communities residents. Same snitch, but in red.
Seriously: Why do people live in HOA communities where people get harrassed on a legal basis? It seems quite bizarre to me.
