#16 Elementary school in the 70's in Rhode Island, there would need to be at least 6" of snow for school to be canceled. Unlike today where the mere mention of snow closes a school. Hell...I remember having over a foot drop and still have to go to school. It was a major bummer, but the recesses were wicked fun. Fierce, non-stop snowball fights until the bell. good

Robby,

The same in Northern NJ in the 70's. The fire siren would blow at 6am if there wasn't any school that day due to weather. More than one snowy day was ruined when there was no siren by 6:05

#32 Opening and closing high up windows. Usually the transom windows above the doors. In my school, atleast.

Raymond,

I think they were also used to pull down maps that were hung up very high (usually a bunch were hung together).

They had just installed these my junior year of high school, still remember the day in chemistry where they had us using the Bunsen burners to bend glass. You could tell the kids that were sheltered and the one s who could use tools by who could get the burner lit with the torch igniter (and then there was the kid that took his Bic lighter out of his pocket to light the burner...)

#51 They had people come to your school to sell yo-yos? wtf In the early 70s yo-yos were considered too dangerous for schools. One time, I had my brother's high-end yo-yo (cost $1.00, and yes it was quite high-end). I pulled it out of my pocket only far enough to show someone - not throwing it - and it was confiscated without return. Being in 7th grade, I had no income to replace it, so there was hell to pay.
