It turns out that among those with permission, there is a female captain who has been flying here for six years. Her name is Ugyen Dema. She worked her way up from a regular pilot to captain and now, it seems, is training others herself.

i guess it is special because the airport is in the mountains and it's a dangerous landing/takeoff. and yeah women pilots are probably still a minority. but you are right, they all receive the same training and a pilot is a pilot.
I think it's special if you understand what airport it is, or why its dangeous. I've landed on runways on islands and mountians in Alaska that put that to shame.
