I question the validity of this situation. A baby is too young to sit through (much less, understand) an eye exam to determine the need for corrective eyewear. Moreover, what physical indication can a 1 year old give to anyone that its vision is impaired? wassat

Carrie,

They can do it with machines now without having someone say "better/worse" verbally... so it is completely valid.

Carrie,Berry is correct. Here in America we have such things. Socialism has not reached deep enough to kill our innovation.

What is this "machine?" Or, are you just being an obstinate @$$hole for the sheer sake of it?

Carrie,

They may have used an auto-refractor. It requires no verbal interaction with the patient. It creates an extremely accurate prescription. I first encountered them at the Japanese company Hoya in the late 1980's. It measures the refraction of the light shone that enters the eye- which is a lens after all.

You can determine a non-verbal child needs glasses from a number of simple tests.

You could argue that these auto- refractors should be better known, it does the job of determining the prescription for lenses in a few minutes - but it would put a lot of optometrists out of work. Many optometrists use them, but go through the whole ancient "phoropter" machine routine ( Better ? worse ?) to justify their charges.
