Everything in nature is just a system of equations trying to solve themselves. Same here: since nothing is perfect, it will eventually reach a point of equilibrium. The trick is to make the time when that is reached long enough to fool our perception.
Even with that, we have to admit. It is a very economical mechanism. In some areas the idea can save a lot of fuel. You would only use so much energy that it would not reach that equilibrium.
