In March 2025, a catastrophic pile-up involving 71 vehicles took place on Interstate 70 in Sherman County, Kansas. The crash was caused by a severe dust storm. Koam News Now notes that this tragic incident resulted in eight fatalities and led to the indefinite closure of the interstate. 

Nearly 24 hours after the accident, crews continued the difficult task of extricating the deceased from the wreckage. Responders put in a lot of effort to help the injured and get them to the closest hospitals. The incident highlighted the dangers posed by sudden and severe weather conditions to road safety.
