This is used on 90% of Dutch highways. Large scale application already dates back to 1995. This is a large contributor to road safety because there is almost no water spray of vehicles during rain.

..and, it's very easy to replace and reuse. Just scrape it off, reheat and reapply.

It is rarely used in Germany due to the fact of the pores clogging up and the whole drainage idea becoming obsolete. Here in Germany it is used in parts of the Highways where rain water cannot be drained to the sides of the road, such as hill tops without the road doing a curve. Short: it is not common.
