While newspapers are filled with news about the pirates of Somalia, there is a war for power that is lasting between the loyal and hardline Islamists. Thousands of innocent people die in this fight. Since the beginning of the insurgency in December 2006, nearly 17,000 civilians lost their lives.  This is not the pirates, which we are used to see in movies. They are well armed and have quite fast boats. Piracy is a very lucrative "business". If they manage to seize a boat, they can get ransom money of millions of dollars for the vessel, crew and cargo. Despite the presence of military patrols in the Gulf of Aden, they still attack boats. Kenya, Yemen and Somalia are very poor, so piracy is a major source of income for many inhabitants of these countries.  Too fun ))  |
