That is called an unstick test.
It is done to all civil carriers.
It is a test of the lowest take off speed for a certain gross takeoff weight.

As well, they use it to measure take off distance relative to weight, speed, runway length, it' all goes into research that they put in the flight manuals for maximum and minimum thresholds...in short,...testing an airplane....prolly the first one. I would like to say that the Airbus A380's first visit to North America, was to Canada, in Nunavut, for cold weather testing. I saw it there when she was sitting there, no markings, just a big white plane. she's a beautiful marvel of mans creations and will to fly...gorgeous. wink elvis
