This is what most Japanese office workers have for lunch. Some foods look strange, and the portions are sooooo small :)

How interesting to read that most of these are breakfast trays, not lunch! And me thinking they looked like seriously appetizing lunches :-)
Eating a variety of small portions is terrific, but indeed nothing revolutionary. Think of Lebanese Mezzes, or in my own France things like crudités or a plateau de fruits de mer. 12 small dishes make as big a meal (but more fun to eat) as one giant single dish. (it's a lot more work to prepare the meal though).
I wish I could afford to go travelling through Japan for a month or two. I'd love to take a train and have one of those "binto" box lunches (spelling????). I hear they're something special.

Some are breakfast, some are lunch. The portions are small but gluttons can have seconds for rice, and sometimes the soup too. And kids who eat 3 or 4 bowls of rice,,, yes they look like average Americans!
