A hot pot is a geothermally heated pool. Natural hot pots may be boiling hot, possibly erupting geysirs now and then. Today, many of them have been "cultivated" into swimmingpools, the hot water diluted with cold water to bring temperatures down to "human friendly" levels (but still hot). In modern hot pots, the water is cleansed and only indirectly heated from the natural hot pot.
