Whale Hunting in Indonesia (23 pics)

Posted in       14 Mar 2011       13277

In a small village in southern Indonesia off the coast of the island of Lembata, the local fishermen battle whales and sharks from a very small wooden boat with sticks. They capture the fish by harpooning them with long spears, and then dismember them in the water because the whales are too heavy and large to pull aboard their small boat.

These are some vintage exercise machines. Like everything else in the old days, not much was known about exercising and how to get into shape. Consequently some of the machines were quite outlandish and very funny.

Great Retro Computer Ads (84 pics)

These amazing old advertisements for computers are really funny to us now. These are from the days where they still had to convince us that computers weren't an instrument of the devil, and that we would find them affordable and useful. From promises of better productivity to making us think it was sexy to have a computer, the advertisers pimped out Leonardo DaVinci and Dom Delouise to hawk their wares.

Explosion at Nuclear Power Plant in Japan (48 pics + 1 video)

Posted in PICTURES       12 Mar 2011       25780

After the devastating earthquake and tsunami, which followed afterwards, a huge blast was observed at the Fukushima-Daiichi atomic power plant that caused the radiation leak.

After the earthquake hit Japan, in several of the reactors at the two Fukushima plants the cooling systems failed and “without cooling, the temperature in the reactor core builds, with the risk that it could melt through its container into the building housing the system.” It also causes pressure in the containers where the reactor is situated.

The Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan declared that the amount of radiation released was "tiny." We sure hope so… but could this be another Chernobyl??

After the jump, you’ll also see the most recent photos of the consequences of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on Friday.
