They are a prayer for your family and symbolize eternal love. The higher you place it on the mountain the greater it means.

Also this guy is tough, but I've seen men carry unbelievable amounts of wood and concrete up 1000+m in Sichuan after the earthquake. Basically destroying their body for a very small wage.
