There is no rational reason why kids of any age shouldn't know the elementary functions of their own bodies. When I explained the flowers and the bees to my then 4,5 yo daughter, I drew parallells to how humans do it, and that significantly helped her understand the need for bees (the reason why it came up was her anger about those nasty insects). It certainly never hurt her knowing from when she was a toddler why there are boys and girls!
The introductory text suggests: "Perhaps this is why the Chinese population is so large" - but empirical evidence contradicts this. In comparable countries (e.g. in Europe vs. USA, or within Europe), the more education kids receive at an early age, the later will they have their sex debut, and the more will they use birth control aids. The population growth rate of China is very low (approx 0.6%/year), and far below that of USA (almost 0.9%/year).
This sex education textbook, titled The Footsteps of Growth (《成长的脚步》), consists of different sections, such as “My body”, "Where do I come from?" and “How to prevent AIDS.” To better explain the content, the textbook employs many bold illustrations including sexual intercourse
