Pet Hippo Kills His Owner (9 pics)

Hippopotamus Humphrey was “like a son” to South African farmer Marius Els. The man raised his pet from the age of 5 months. Marius used to “ride” his 1,200 kg hippo’s back in the past. And now Mr. Els is gone.

It’s not that safe to have a relationship with the most dangerous animal in Africa. Marius was gouged by his 6-year-old pet to death. The animal repeatedly bit his owner in a fierce attack. The 41-year-old man’s mutilated body submerged in a river. He had been dead for an unknown period of time. His death was tragic.

Domesticated animals are bad enough to deal with sometimes.
Watch a cow get crazy when you have to deal with a calf

Mr. Els rescued the hippo, who probably wouldn't have survived on his own. The mistake Mr. Els made, was not releasing Humphrey back into the wild when he was old enough to look after himself. At six years old, Humphrey was ready for a mate.

It's a shame this happened. Mr. Els meant well, but wild animals are meant to be wild. Caretakers at sanctuaries are very respectful of their charges at all times.

I just hope the hippo wasn't killed.
