The Blue Lagoon is located 13km (8 miles) from Keflavik Airport and 39km (24 miles) from Reykjavik.
The steamy waters are part of a lava formation. The water temperature averages 37-39 degrees C (98-102 F).
The water is used to run turbines that generate electricity. It goes through the turbine, passes through a heat exchanger and then is fed into the lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon has two steam baths. One is a cave-like structure, built from lava rocks with benches and soft lighting that imitates an open fire. The other steam bath has white walls that resemble white silica mud and offers a view of the lagoon. The geothermal steam baths are around 45 degrees C (113 F).
