What is really amazing is the series of hydro/pneumatic elevators they installed inside the mountain. You can see part of one of the tubular elevator shafts in the picture. This was all built in 1425 - 1455.

This was actually a miniature model built for the monastery scene in Batman Begins, but a stagehand fell on it, so they had to build a different one.
