If the earth was this near Jupiter, il would be immediately disintegrated by tidal forces (just read "Roche limit" on Wikipedia)

are you sure about that? the distance between io and jupiter versus earth and the moon is roughly the same- 350,000km. yet io has not been torn apart for some reason...

Gigantes, you're right. The Roche limit for the pair Jupiter-Earth is approx. 100,000 km. However, the Earth would look like Io, and the oceans tide levels would reach hundreds of meters
