Grande Hotel Beira was opened in Mozambique in 1954 and was claimed to be the most luxurious hotel of Africa. The building with the area of 21,000 sq. meters had over 130 rooms, several dance halls, conference rooms and a huge swimming pool. The hotel was never profitable and was closed in the early ‘60s. Over the next decades it served as a refugee camp, a jail for political prisoners and the living quarters for the police and army officers. Today the building is occupied by several thousand squatters.

American blacks would have covered the place with graffiti and destroyed much of it.
