must have been an unusual period. the samurai class had been abolished a few decades before, and the post WWII-era industrial period had not yet been formed, which is the japanese society that we know and love today.

yes and no. the japanese do an amazing job of keeping the core of their traditions and culture alive even as they integrate new ways and new technology. they're probably better at that than anyone in the world.
