The Unkai Terrace is located atop a mountain peak on the island of Hokkaido in Japan and provides a scenic spot for tourists to enjoy a unique and spectacular view of a natural cloud formation.
The “unkai” or sea of clouds is a phenomenon that occurs in the town of Tomamu as a result of hot springs in the area. The difference in temperature between night and day causes a blanket of thick cloud to form over the mountainous region and has become a tourist attraction since a gondola system and terrace was put in place to allow people to travel above the clouds. Gondola rides cost $20 but as the pictures show, it is well worth the trip.
