This piece of land in the East River is called North Brother Island and is situated between the Bronx and Riker’s Island in New York City. Measuring only 400m by 250m, it was uninhabited until 1885 when Riverside Hospital was moved there as a way of keeping people with smallpox and other contagious diseases away from the rest of the population. In 1904, a steamship was shipwrecked on the shore of this island and over 1000 people died in the resultant fire or by drowning. The land is now abandoned but Reddit user, Victav, took a trip to the island on a kayak and took these incredible photos to show the world.
