When the inhabitants of this old high rise building in China refused to move out, the builders were left with only one choice…

Chinese real estate developers offered these residents money to move from their apartments so that the building could be demolished. Since they did not take the money, builders started working around them and left only one entrance open to the stubborn occupants.

The next step, the utilities will stop working. Then, residents will begin mysteriously disappearing in the middle of the night. Government sources will claim the building is haunted...

Thousands of empty apartments in empty cities all over the country and these folks won't move. They are "peculiar" just like the poem says.

if proper procedure was working in the first place it never would have come to this. the right paperwork filed and served, the required waiting period followed, concluding with the cops coming and forcably evicting if necessary. et cetera.

i suspect they are not as stubborn as some think. they probably know that they get to collect more money if the water, electrical and sewage services are cut. they are probably enjoying their breathing room for the moment and waiting for the offer to be raised. this strategy is hardly peculiar to china, although the way it played out maybe is.
