Starlings flock from Northern Europe to Italy each year due to the warmer Mediterranean climate. Typically the city is able to cope with the increased bird droppings by employing people to clean up the mess or implementing methods of deterring the birds such as pruning the trees. This year, financial cuts means that none of this has taken place and locals and tourists have been forced to contend with the masses of bird poo everywhere.
