In Africa, Hippos are know as the 'police animals of the rivers' as their docile and calm nature help them keep all the other aggressive animals in check. They make great pets too and love to play fetch and can very easily be housebroken.
The only real problem with hippos is that they have problems navigating stairs so hippo pet owners should only live in ground floor homes. They don't like to sit up and beg either.

They are so popular in Africa, that many black women emulate their shape by eating copious amounts so that they look like hippos.

Hippos cause the second highest number of animal-related fatalities in Africa, after Mosquitoes. They are not noted for being kindly creatures.

They are fiercely territorial. A croc is both a threat to their young and a territorial competitor. A wildebeest is neither. It makes sense (genetically) to aid the wildebeest, deny the croc its food, and therefore reduce the risk to territory and offspring. What you are seeing is not benevolence, but instinct.
