The pope from 853-855 was not John VIII (who ruled from 872-882). Leo IV ruled from 847-855. His replacement was Pope Benedict III, and he was a capable ruler until 858.
By the way, there was never an English Pope named John. There was one named Adrian in the 12th Century.
